Sixty Seconds: Get to know… Sarah Liegmann | Boxing News

Name: Sarah Liegmann

Age: 22

Twitter: @sarahliegmann

Nationality: German

From: Bonn, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany

Stance: Orthodox

Record: 9-0-0 (2)

Next fight: I’m still in negotiations, but it’s looking like the 23rd of March in Frankfurt. I like the city and they have a pretty nice fight location for that date. I´m looking forward to it.

When and why you started boxing:

My career in combat sports started in kickboxing in 2013. I actually only started with kickboxing because my best friend asked me to join her for a session. As you can see, it wasn’t only that one session. After over 200 fights, I started with boxing in 2018 but wasn’t taking it very seriously because kickboxing was still my priority. I only started boxing to improve my boxing skills for kickboxing, but I kind of fell in love with the sport. In 2019/2020, I became part of the German youth national team. After I finished school, I got an invitation from Mark Taffet to come to Florida, where I also met coach John David Jackson. After that time abroad, I decided to turn pro by the end of 2021. I went back to Germany and continued to fight as an amateur, but in the summer of 2021 I went back to the US for 12 weeks of camp with coach John for my debut in Nebraska.

Favourite all-time fighter:

Floyd Mayweather and Claressa Shields

Best fight you’ve seen:

Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor vs. Chantelle Cameron 2. The technique, power, and speed in both fights were high-class and exciting to watch.

Personal career highlight:

Winning my WBC youth world championship title. I decided to fight back home and not in the USA to have all my family and friends around me, and that was just an amazing feeling. Also, fighting on the all-female fight card in London headlined by Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall. It was my first time fighting in a big arena

Toughest opponent:

Carisse Brown back in Detroit in June 2023. She was physically much stronger because of her age. I knew I had to box at distance and on the back foot, which worked out pretty good for me, but it was definitely challenging for me to deal with her pressure.

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:

My best attributes are definitely my mindset, focus, and discipline. My worst attribute is my love of chocolate, which I can´t eat 90% of the time.

Training tip:

Good music. It always helps me to motivate myself through training sessions I don’t like too much.

Favourite meal/restaurant:

Sushi – in general Asian food and all kinds of sweet treats. I love chocolate. After my fights I always eat some Kinder bars or Nutella.

Which other athlete would you like to be?

I think if I wouldn’t been a boxer, I would be a gymnast. I love the aesthetics and versatility of gymnastics and how trained your body looks. I always watch the tournaments on TV.

Last film/TV show you saw:

Wonka, in the cinema. I loved the message of the movie. Every good thing in this world started with a dream.

Who would play you in a film of your life?

Scarlett Johansson. She is an amazing actor and I´d love to see her in boxing action scenes.

Best advice received:

Don’t let anyone ever get in the way of your dreams. It´s your life, your future, and your goal, and nobody can take this from you.

Worst rumour about yourself:

People who don’t know me often think I’m arrogant because I´m a very introverted person in new social situations.

Something not many people know about you:

Many people don’t know that I have three names: Sarah (Jewish), Maria (Christian) & Djamila (Islamic). They represent the three world religions.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years:

I see myself as an undisputed world champion with a good payment and as a psychologist with my own office.
