Grant Williams’ first game with the Charlotte Hornets was a success. The Hornets defeated a banged-up Memphis Grizzlies team 115-106 in a year where victories have been hard to come by.
Williams finished the game with 15 points, eight rebounds, and one assist. However, it was his postgame comments that made headlines. Many believe that the 25-year-old threw a shot at both the Dallas Mavericks and superstar Luka Doncic.
Williams was shipped off from the Mavs ahead of this year’s NBA trade deadline. Following his being traded, reports came out that he was moved in large part due to rubbing his teammates the wrong way. This is the most likely reason for Williams to take a jab at his former team.
Williams struggled this year with the Mavericks. While the team was hoping he would make a great role player, things never quite clicked. Williams was a solid piece for the Boston Celtics in previous seasons.
Now, he will have the opportunity to get back on track with Charlotte. The Hornets are a young team looking for some leadership to right the ship. Williams can provide just that for the team.
As for Dallas, the consensus by many during the trade deadline was that they got better by moving Williams. It remains to be seen who ultimately won the trade, but this likely won’t be the last comment made between the two sides. Ironically enough, the Hornets and Mavericks will square off in Dallas on April 9th.
