President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola called for putting into practice the process of creating an autonomous European security and defense system complementing NATO.
Speaking in the Estonian parliament on Monday, she said the discussion on European strategic autonomy must move from a theoretical to a practical level. Metsola said this concerns its competitiveness, energy supply, trade and defense and Europe must increase its capabilities and create a new security and defense system that complements NATO, rather than competes with it.
Metsola confirmed that the European Parliament’s support for Ukraine will remain unwavering, including in the process of integration with Europe. She said Europe continues to demand that Russian assets be used to restore Ukraine.
While on a one-day visit to Estonia, Metsola met with President Alar Karis, Parliament Speaker Lauri Hussar and Prime Minister Kaja Kallas.
